But until then, Mazda wants to be WRX's maker, with the next MS3 going AWD.

Wait, AWD MS3?
This changes everything.
Do I still want a 2011-2014 Mustang GT?
I don't know what to believe anymore.
Hold me.

Hmmm, well tire slaying hooning or mud hooning ?

There is no "or"

Wait wait wait.
What do we actually know about the next MS3? Will there even be one? I'd heard through the grapevine that Mazda had all but killed the MS program and was focused only on Skyactiv.

Mid-engined SkyActive 16X rotary with torque-supplementing electric Rear wheel drive, torque biasing, and an automated dual clutch gearbox, with regenerative braking...
Sounds like a great idea for the next RX sports car.
But if MazdaSpeed 3 is going AWD... and keeping up mazda's handling and ride quality...
Subaru had better REALLY step up their game in the suspension, ride quality, and handling department.
Even if the Mazda isn't quite as powerful, if it is a better car to spend time in without jarring one's teeth out and rattling over every pavement joint... the Mazda may have a more decisive advantage over Subaru than Mitsubishi was ever able to muster, in real world driving, and sales.
Especially if it is better than WRX, and less money than STI.
Considering how well built and reliable, and nimble my 99 Miata is, compared to the suspension repairs my '05 Legacy GT has perennially required... I may have to watch this battle unfold.
If Mazda builds a 3-door coupe variation of the MazdaSpeed 3 with turbo-SkyActiv, and AWD with a manual or automated-clutch gearbox... the battle would be decisive.
A new Mazda 323 GTX. Subaru won't build a new GC8 Impreza 2.5RS/WRX/22B coupe.

US MS3 is the Mazda 3 MPS of other places, that article said they are still gonna do it, I guess.

Yep. What I'd heard was that the MPS was a terrible seller in the rest of the world and represented a significant loss, especially in Europe. With more of a focus on global platforms, it wasn't going to make sense to develop a new MS3 just for North America, especially with AWD.
I HOPE they do, that said. I love the looks of the new 3 hatch, and a turbo, AWD version with a dual clutch transmission and acceptable fuel economy would make my day.

Rumor around North America office is that it's coming, but no word on spec. Personally, I wouldn't be against something a bit more mild (i.e. realistic) given the high-compression engine and reality of tiny volume sales. IMHO (only), a chassis-focused approach with FWD and the 2.5L HP dialed to 200 would be my ultimate daily driver. Underwhelming for die-hards, perhaps, but most folks need to preserve MPG in a daily car and that was an issue with the past ones. With AWD and Turbos it'll be awesome but also a very hard sell.

Would be very interesting (and appealing) if true.
Subaru: "We're not going to build a WRX wagon any more."
Mazda: "Okay, we'll build it!"

I think you just answered your question...
And for the record buying an earlier 00's version will leave you more spare cash to replace all the stuff you break offroading! (Not bashing stangs, anything will break stuff offroading, ask me how I know). Part of the fun right?
And for the record great photo...

Earlier 00's version doesn't have a 400+ HP V8.

OK, good point there.
...how much do crate coyotes go for again...?
